PolyTech has expanded its lightning expertise

We are thrilled to announce that GLPS is now part of PolyTech. This means that PolyTech can now – from start to finish – deliver everything required from a lightning protection project for the most advanced wind turbines while ensuring a faster

We are a global provider of
lightning protection solutions
for mission critical industries.

A strikingly powerful partner

Hope is a powerful resource but will not prevent the potential damage of lightning strikes – one of nature’s most destructive hazards. But lightning is predictable, controllable and the risk is preventable. What you need is smart thinking and effective solutions to plan and protect your investments. It’s your responsibility to look after your business; we’ve made it ours to make sure you can.

Based on more than 20 years of industry experience, numerous design projects utilising advanced numerical modeling of direct and indirect lightning effects, and a world class, full-featured lightning laboratory, you are guaranteed a dedicated and skilled partner for your LPS challenges.

We interact actively in the lightning community by partaking in technical conferences, pre-standardisation groups, international standardisation committees (UL, IEC, CIGRÉ) etc.

Whether you are looking for lightning consultancy; testing or installation services or specially adapted world-class lightning products, when you team up with us, we will succeed together.

Research Projects and University Colaborations

Project title: Lightning protection of wind turbine blades with carbon fibre composite materials

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT: The project aims at providing an innovative interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial training network for four Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), which will integrate in a single project:

  • Science-based Training in materials, mechanical and electrical engineering;
  • Transferable Skills-based Training in carbon fibre composite (CFRP) materials, wind turbine blade design, lightning protection technologies, business and innovation, and other competences;
  • Research-based Training designed around the cutting-edge challenge for the Wind Power Industry related to lightning protection of large wind turbines with blades incorporating CFRP structural components.

The goal is to train four ESRs to be familiar with both Industry (15 months at GLPS and secondments at industrial partner organizations for 3 months) and Academia (18 months at University of Southampton. The training will provide a range of skills to all ESRs making them high-potential candidates to be employed by the wind power industry players or the academia

The Sparcarb consortium consists of GLPS and University of Southampton and the following partner organisations:

  • University of Denmark (DTU)
  • LM Wind Power A/
  • Blade Dynamics
  • Nordex Energy
  • The Boeing Company
  • Zoltek

The project is funded by The European Union under the Horizon 2020 program

Innovative Training Networks (ITN)
Call: H2020-MSCA-ITN-2014

Project Title: Enhanced LIghtning effect TEsting capabilities for optimized wind turbine reliability

The overall aim of the project is to design and manufacture test equipment capable of verifying lightning performance of large scale wind turbine components (nacelles, blades, etc.)

Specific objectives are:

  • Collection and analysis of lightning exposure on actual wind turbines
  • Design and construction of test system
  • Demonstration on a full scale test
  • Interact with ongoing standardization (IEC 61400-24) and within Cigre (C4.36 on winter lightning and engineering consequences)

University partner:

  • Technical University og Denmark (DTU)

Advisory board:

  • DONG Energy
  • Vestas Wind Systems
  • LM Wind Power
  • Siemens Wind Power
  • EDP Renewables

The project is partly funded på EUDP, under the Danish Energy Agency.

Quality certification AS/EN 9100

As a professional provider to professional industries, our quality management system is certified to AS/EN9100 - a standard that secures master-class quality in both products and services.

We partake in international standardisation in the following committees:

  • S581 - Danish National Committee - Lightning Protection - GLPS has the role of chairman
  • TC88/MT24 - International working group under IEC - 61400-24 - Lightning protection of wind turbines - GLPS has the role of secretary
  • Cigre working group C4.36 on winter lightning and the engineering consequences - GLPS has the role of secretary

Certified Comsol consultant

Our work with Comsol Multiphysics was recognised in June 2011, when we were awarded the title of Certified Comsol Consultant.

The reason Comsol chose this close colaboration with GLPS lies in the desire to continue developing the use and application of the software, as well as an acknowledgment of our academic ambitions for FEM simulation. We are proud to be one of the 33 companies in the world that Comsol choose to work with in close collaboration.
