Research Projects and University Colaborations

Project title: Lightning protection of wind turbine blades with carbon fibre composite materials

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT: The project aims at providing an innovative interdisciplinary and inter-sectorial training network for four Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), which will integrate in a single project:

  • Science-based Training in materials, mechanical and electrical engineering;
  • Transferable Skills-based Training in carbon fibre composite (CFRP) materials, wind turbine blade design, lightning protection technologies, business and innovation, and other competences;
  • Research-based Training designed around the cutting-edge challenge for the Wind Power Industry related to lightning protection of large wind turbines with blades incorporating CFRP structural components.

The goal is to train four ESRs to be familiar with both Industry (15 months at GLPS and secondments at industrial partner organizations for 3 months) and Academia (18 months at University of Southampton. The training will provide a range of skills to all ESRs making them high-potential candidates to be employed by the wind power industry players or the academia

The Sparcarb consortium consists of GLPS and University of Southampton and the following partner organisations:

Project Title: Enhanced LIghtning effect TEsting capabilities for optimized wind turbine reliability

The overall aim of the project is to design and manufacture test equipment capable of verifying lightning performance of large scale wind turbine components (nacelles, blades, etc.)

Specific objectives are:

  • Collection and analysis of lightning exposure on actual wind turbines
  • Design and construction of test system
  • Demonstration on a full scale test
  • Interact with ongoing standardization (IEC 61400-24) and within Cigre (C4.36 on winter lightning and engineering consequences)
